NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland Statement on 24/7 Emergency Contraception on Campus Bill
HB 1205 will provide students at public colleges and universities in Maryland 24/7 access to emergency contraception (EC). The bill also calls for campuses to offer contraceptive counseling or referrals for contraceptive counseling to other qualified healthcare providers, as well as clear and accessible information relating to the availability of EC on-campus and off-campus. The bill sponsors are Del. Maricé Morales (D20) and Del. Shelly Hettleman (D11). NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland Executive Director Diana Philip released the following statement:
"In December of 2015, NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland began meeting with college students about their experiences with timely access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare at student health centers. We found a common theme: students across Maryland said it was a challenge to access to emergency contraception on campus.
"When students need access to time-sensitive medication, they shouldn’t face additional barriers and delays. It is vital that emergency contraception be available in a timely manner in order for it to be as effective as possible. Students from six Maryland public universities have organized around this bill, including collecting petition signatures, on-campus meetings and events, written testimony, and oral testimony in support of the bill. Maryland students are demanding timely access to emergency contraception and we will continue to advocate with them for HB 1205.”
