Appalling New Attacks Against Women from the Bush Administration: Take Action!

Recently, the New York Times reported on a new proposal by the Bush Administration concerning conditions on aid recipients under federal health programs run by the Department of Health and Human Services.Included in this proposal, the Bush administration found it necessary to redefine abortion as “any of the various procedures — including the prescription, dispensing and administration of any drug or the performance of any procedure or any other action — that results in the termination of the life of a human being in-utero between conception and natural birth, whether before or after implantation.” This definition of abortion is incredibly broad and would include many types of birth control and emergency contraception. In addition, hospitals, clinics, researchers and medical schools who receive funding from the HHS would be required to sign “written certificates” alleging that they will not discriminate against hiring nurses and other providers who do not advocate abortion or particular types of birth control due to “religious beliefs or moral convictions.”

Decrease in Birth Control Pricing in Clinics and Universities Soon to Come!

The US Senate just recently passed a supplemental war-spending bill that includes the decreased pricing of birth control in Family Planning Clinics and University health centers. While this is an exciting victory, the bill still needs to pass in the House. The legislation is scheduled to go to the House in early June.

Ever since 2007, low-income, and college-aged women found it difficult to find affordable birth control because of the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA). The DRA was intended to close a loophole in the Medicaid drug-rebate law, however in the process it inadvertently decreased access to affordable birth control on college campuses and low-income health clinics. In the last year, people have been outraged over the failure of the government to address this critical issue.

Even though the bill passed the Senate, the birth control provision is still at risk. According to Medical News Today Bush has planned to veto the bill if provisions like subsidized birth control are kept. Lawmakers also may be obligated to edit or even remove certain provisions to assure the bill is passed in the House. With the House session nearing, it’s critical for Maryland residents to contact their representatives to express their support for restoring affordable birth control! Your input can be the deciding factor regarding the affordable birth control provision.
